Either through texting or posting on social media, you probably have seen and used a bright yellow smiley face. Although it appears everywhere for many kinds of situations, you may not know its original meaning. Today, on World Smile Day, it’s the perfect opportunity to learn how this icon came about and how you can spread smiles. Keep reading to find out more about the smiley face’s background as well as what you can do to celebrate World Smile Day.

How the Smiley Face Began

Back in the 1960s, an artist in Worcester wanted to create a symbol of kindness during a tumultuous political and social time. The yellow icon was intended to encourage people to be compassionate to others, despite any differences in religion, ethnicity, politics, or socioeconomic standing.

World Smile Day Now

Although the smiley face has become heavily commercialized in the years following its creation, in 1999, World Smile Day become an annual celebration and reminder of the smiley face’s real meaning. Today, consider doing at least one kind act for someone to help them smile.

How You Can Share a Smile

Being kind doesn’t have to involve a big gesture. In fact, little things can make a significant difference. In your local area, there are many chances for you to participate in worthy causes to help those who may need an uplifting smile most. Whether you want to donate to charities or volunteer, you can easily give others a reason to smile. Plus, you’ll find that being kind to others can make you feel good as well!

What You Can Do for Your Own Smile

In addition to being kind to those around you, take some time to consider being kind to yourself. If you don’t have good dental health, you aren’t practicing self-care and may not have the confidence to share your own smile. Every day, you need to brush and floss to stop cavities and infection from harming your teeth and gums. You also must see your dentist at least twice a year for checkups and cleanings to maintain a healthy, strong smile. If you require additional dental work, it’s worthwhile to get it done so that you can show your smile to others, brightening their day.

World Smile Day may happen just once a year, but you can take advantage of little opportunities to spread kindness and create smiles anytime in the year!
